Nevada Apostille Services
When you need to use a Nevada document in another country, Nevada apostille services can help prepare eligible birth and marriage certificates, academic records, powers of attorney, and business documents for international use.
Beverly Hills Apostille can determine whether your document requires a Nevada apostille, federal authentication, or another form of legalization.
What Is a Nevada Apostille?
An apostille is a certificate that authenticates the signature and official capacity of the person who signed a public document. It does not certify that the information contained in the document is accurate.
Nevada adopted the Hague Conference’s Model Apostille Certificate in 2013. For documents going to countries participating in the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, the Nevada Secretary of State can issue an apostille. For documents intended for non-Hague countries, Nevada issues a certification of signature instead.
The destination country determines which process applies. Hague Convention countries accept an apostille, while non-Hague countries may require additional authentication and embassy or consular legalization. Documents We Can Help You Apostille
The appropriate process depends on who issued or signed the document. Common apostille documents in Nevada include:
- Birth certificates: An apostille birth certificate in Nevada request requires a certified copy of the Nevada birth record.
- Marriage certificates: You may need an apostille marriage certificate in Nevada for marriage registration, residency, or immigration matters abroad.
- Diplomas and academic records: Foreign universities, employers, or licensing authorities may request an apostille for a Nevada diploma or academic record.
- Powers of attorney: A Nevada power of attorney may need an apostille for international property, financial, or business matters.
- Business records: Nevada business documents may need an apostille for foreign transactions, corporate matters, or expansion into another country.
- Adoption and parental documents
- Court records
- Affidavits and other notarized documents
Certified Nevada public records must come from the appropriate county, district court, or records office. Some documents must be notarized by a Nevada notary before they can receive an apostille.
Nevada vs. Federal Apostilles
One of the easiest mistakes to make is sending a document to the wrong government office. A document issued by a federal agency does not go through the Nevada Secretary of State apostille process.
| Document | Issuing or Signing Authority | Authentication Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Nevada Birth or Marriage Certificate | Nevada state or local authority | Nevada Secretary of State |
| Nevada Notarized Document | Nevada notary | Nevada Secretary of State |
| Certified Nevada Business Filings | Nevada Secretary of State | Nevada Secretary of State |
| FBI Identity History Summary | Federal Bureau of Investigation | U.S. Department of State |
| Other Qualifying Federal Documents (e.g., naturalization or federal agency certificates) | U.S. federal agency | U.S. Department of State |
The U.S. Department of State handles apostilles for qualifying federal documents, including FBI background checks. Even if you live in Nevada, an FBI background check must go through the federal apostille process because it is a federal document. Our guide to federal apostille services provides more information about federal authentication.
If you still need to obtain your background check, our FBI channeling guide covers that process. You can also learn when an FBI background check needs an apostille and how to apostille documents and obtain an FBI background check while living abroad.
How the Nevada Apostille Process Works
The exact steps depend on the document, but Nevada document authentication typically involves:
- Identifying the document: Determine whether it is a Nevada public record, Nevada-notarized document, federal document, or document from another state.
- Determining the destination country: The country where the document will be used affects whether an apostille or another form of authentication is appropriate.
- Obtaining the correct version: Public records may require an official certified copy rather than a photocopy.
- Completing any required notarization: Some private documents must be notarized before authentication.
- Submitting the document to the correct authority: Nevada documents may go to the Nevada Secretary of State, while federal documents require federal processing.
- Arranging return delivery: This is especially important for customers who live outside Nevada or the United States.
Using an apostille service in Nevada can help simplify these steps when you are unfamiliar with authentication requirements or cannot handle the submission yourself.
Does a Document Need to Be Notarized First?
Not always. The Nevada Secretary of State has different requirements for each document. Certified records, such as birth certificates, do not need notarization. Private documents may need notarization before they can receive an apostille.
A notary does not issue the apostille. The Nevada Secretary of State authenticates the appropriate public official or notary signature. See our guide on whether a notary can apostille a document.

FAQs
Do Nevada documents need to be notarized before receiving an apostille?
Depends on the type of document.
- Certified public records (such as birth, marriage, and death certificates) do not need to be notarized. Get a certified copy from the issuing government office, and the Nevada Secretary of State can apostille it as is.
- Personal and Commercial documents (such as powers of attorney, affidavits, and contracts) must be notarized first. A Nevada notary has to sign and stamp the document before it can be apostilled.
How long does it take to get a Nevada apostille?
The Nevada Secretary of State currently lists its standard processing time as approximately two weeks, with expedited services available. Processing times can change, so allow extra time for mailing or return delivery.
How do I apostille an FBI background check if I live in Nevada?
An FBI Identity History Summary is a federal document, so the Nevada Secretary of State does not apostille it. The U.S. Department of State’s Office of Authentications handles qualifying FBI background checks.
Can I obtain a Nevada apostille while living outside the United States?
Yes. You don’t need to return to Nevada to submit an eligible Nevada document for authentication. Beverly Hills Apostille can help customers abroad coordinate the process and return delivery.
